142 units and commercial space
Downtown Long Beach continues to see a wave of new development projects, with the city’s planning commission approving a new seven-story apartment building with 142 units and ground-floor commercial space.
Located at 500 West Broadway, the project is set to include 65 studio apartments. 41 one-bedrooms, 32 two-bedrooms, and four three-bedroom units, according to a staff report presented to the commission.
The building will be constructed atop a three-level parking structure with 191 spaces. As a condition of approval, parking for 80 bicycles will also be included. Street-level commercial space will include 1,168 square feet of retail and a 2,267-square-foot cafe.
Once complete, the building will offer amenities like a fitness center, community room, and a rooftop deck with a pool and spa.
Renderings show that the project, designed by Urban Architecture Lab, will have a contemporary, stacked blocks look, with balconies and tree-shaded open spaces dispersed throughout.
In a City of Long Beach press release, Councilmember Jeanine Pearce said that the project would “further activate one of the main Downtown corridors, attracting new residents and visitors, and enhancing the livability and quality of life of our City’s core.”
Recently, the city’s downtown has seen a flurry of new development projects, including a 35-story residential tower set to become the tallest building in Long Beach. Meanwhile, just last month, a pair of developments with a combined 200 units of housing broke ground at two downtown project sites.
